Sudah pernah mendengar proyek ini? MIT Media Laboratory -yang dikomandani Nicholas Negroponte (chairman) dan Mary Lou Jepsen (chief technology officer)-mencanangkan program laptop murah untuk anak sekolah (terutama) di negara-negara berkembang. Harga yang diajukan hanya sebesar $100 per buah dan dijual hanya kepada pemerintah dalam jumlah besar untuk didistribusikan kepada murid-murid yang memang layak membutuhkan.

Spesifikasi teknis yang ditawarkan kira-kira meliputi processor dengan kecepatan 500MHz, memory 1GB, dan berbasis sistem operasi Linux. Laptop ini juga sudah Wi-Fi enabled dan mendukung port USB. Teknologi inovatif konon juga dimasukkan pada sistem power untuk screen. Proyek ini sudah terdengar gaungnya sejak lama (Januari 2005) dan benar-benar akan diluncurkan tahun depan.

Tahap produksinya saat ini sedang dilakukan. MIT sudah membuka tender untuk mass manufacturing produk ini. Apple termasuk yang memasukkan penawaran menarik. Sayangnya tawaran ini ditampik dengan alasan MIT lebih menyukai sistem yang bisa dikembangkan sendiri oleh developer mereka tanpa ketergantungan berlebih pada Apple. Konon Cina, Brasil, Thailand, Mesir, dan Nigeria sudah menyatakan minatnya untuk membeli masing-masing setidaknya 1 juta unit. Untuk pasar komersial juga telah dipersiapkan produk serupa dengan harga sekitar $200. Tidak tanggung-tanggung, perusahaan besar sekelas Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Brightstar, Google, News Corporation, Nortel Networks, maupun Red Hat ikut memberi kontribusi dalam proyek ini.

Pertanyaannya kemudian adalah, mampukah Indonesia memanfaatkannya? Tentu saja hal ini sangat tergantung pada political will para punggawa negeri ini. Tapi asumsikan saja pemerintah mau memborong 1 juta buah laptop. Berarti total kos yang dikeluarkan sekitar $100 juta atau kurang lebih Rp 1 triliun. Dibandingkan dengan APBN kita yang, lets say, ratusan triliun itu, angka ini jelas relatif kecil. Bahkan kurang dari anggaran biaya kepresidenan selama kurun waktu satu tahun.

Lalu soal manfaatnya? Tentu saja sangat strategis, berdampak besar, dengan skala nasional. Bayangkan andaikata 1 juta anak sekolah di daerah-daerah terpelosok bisa memiliki akses untuk ilmu pengetahuan terkini dan informasi yang selalu up-to-date dari dunia internasional. Andaikata satu buah laptop digunakan secara bergantian oleh 2 atau 3 anak, maka akan ada 2-3 juta anak Indonesia yang mempunyai akses ke laptop. Belum lagi jika akses internetnya dimanfaatkan, tentu saja manfaatnya bisa meningkat lebih tinggi lagi. Kalau akses internet belum terjangkau penuh, masih bisa digantikan oleh CD berisi mata pelajaran atau informasi lain yang membuat laptop murah ini tetap bermanfaat.

Akibatnya, dengan bantuan laptop murah ini mutu pendidikan bisa perlahan terangkat. Anak Indonesia sedari kecil akan mulai terbiasa dengan bahasa Inggris -bahkan mungkin bahasa Perancis, Jerman, Mandarin, Jepang, dan seterusnya. Kerjasama mutualisme dengan anak-anak sekolah di negara lain juga bisa mulai dibangun. Tentu saja hal ini akan sangat berdampak besar bagi wawasan mereka. Dalam jangka panjang, semoga saja akan ada banyak calon pemimpin dari daerah terpencil yang nantinya mampu merealisasikan bakat dan kemampuannya sendiri. Bukan mustahil kalau di tahun 2015 nanti akan muncul pemenang Nobel berkebangsaan Indonesia. Who knows?

Kendati demikian, di banyak daerah pelosok, akses jaringan listrik (apalagi jaringan internet) mungkin belum bisa diperoleh. Tetapi di sisi lain hal ini akan menciptakan tantangan bagi praktisi teknologi di negara ini untuk merancang dan menciptakan jaringan listrik maupun jaringan internet secara kreatif, murah, namun tetap efektif. Misalnya membuat sumber lisrik yang digerakkan oleh tenaga engkol manusia, atau generator listrik seperti halnya lampu sepeda, atau bahkan sel surya, kincir angin, atau dinamo hidro yang lebih sophisticated. Untuk akses internetnya mungkin bisa dibuat semacam antena parabola yang digerakkan oleh sumber listrik tadi. (Maaf, mungkin teman-teman yang punya background engineering jauh lebih tahu dari saya)

Lalu bagaimana dengan resikonya? Tentu saja resiko itu selalu ada. Misalnya korupsi di lapangan di mana laptop murah ini justru dijual ke pihak lain sehingga pemanfaatannya menjadi berantakan. Idealnya memang pemerintah membeli dalam partai besar kemudian menyalurkannya kepada sekolah-sekolah melalui mekanisme yang benar-benar baik. Prioritasnya adalah daerah-daerah yang miskin dan terpencil. Tentu saja disertakan bersama paket infrastruktur yang layak, termasuk gedung sekolah yang memadai, antena parabola, sistem jaringan Wi-Fi, dan seterusnya.

Baru-baru ini, RUU tentang guru dan dosen telah disahkan menjadi UU. Ini adalah pertanda baik bagi kemajuan pendidikan negeri ini. Kesejahteraan dan nasib guru mulai diperhatikan. Kualitas staf pengajar juga mulai distandardisasikan. Dan andai saja pemerintah juga merencanakan untuk mengambil manfaat dari program ini, tentu saja manfaat yang diperoleh akan luar biasa besar. Memang benar bahwa ini uang yang tidak akan kembali dalam bentuk nyata. Tetapi, seperti halnya apa yang telah diamanatkan UUD 1945, usaha-usaha untuk mencerdaskan bangsa dan menghasilkan pribadi yang lebih cerdas dan lebih terampil perlu mendapat prioritas.

Saya pribadi saat ini memang belum punya kemampuan untuk ikut berpartisipasi dalam program mulia semacam itu. Keterbatasan saya tentu ada pada lack of knowledge, lack of skills, lack of capabilities, dan tentu saja soal pendanaan. Tapi, kalau boleh saya menghimbau buat para pakar dan praktisi teknologi informasi dan komunikasi di negeri ini, marilah kita sama-sama turun ke lapangan, berbuat sesuatu yang riil dan bermanfaat bagi negeri ini. Tidak melulu hanya berkoar-koar di seminar, melakukan debat kusir di media, menulis di blog (seperti saya), atau mungkin, malah mengurusi blogger yang usil membuat manipulasi foto. ;)

The better notebooks can get 3-6 hours of use from a fully charged battery. Other factors affect battery life but the CPU plays a crucial role. The Intel Core two Pair gets the most performance and has the best battery life. Chalk up another and for the Core 2 Couple . The Intel Core Pair also helps great battery life. AMD’s Turion line ranks well but the performance isn’t as great as the Core Duo line of chips.

Hard drive space is significant too. If you do not have enough space you may continually be backing up items so you can clear out some space on your hard drive to keep your computer running. Keep in mind that media files take up the most space. So if you aren’t storing large amounts of flicks and music on your PC you will probably be just fine with a 60-80 GB hard drive.

Other things to consider are your marginals. As an instance, you need wireless net access. If your inexpensive notebook computer doesn’t come with one you could have to get a wireless card. Will the PC have a multimedia reader? Depending on how frequently you need to transfer information these can be quite helpful. Your optical drive can be crucial too. Will the inexpensive notebook PC you’re looking at have a CD/DVD burner? Having a drive that is interchangeable might be a pleasant feature to search for as well.

So, now that we know what we are on the lookout for how much will all of this cost? For new notebook PCs you can get a Core 2 Couple machine starting around $800. If you look around and do not mind purchasing used you can find a pretty decent cheap notebook PC for $400-$500. However, purchasing used you typically forego the warranty.

India's ultra-ultra-cheap $10 (really $20) laptop is going to be revealed on February 3rd.
Not much is currently know about the laptop, called the Rs 500, except that it has the capacity for 2GB of RAM, and that it will be revealed at Tirupati upon the launch of the National Mission on Education.

The ultra-cheap laptop project was first made known three years ago, and is a direct opponent to the XO laptop. India's officials were resistant to the One Laptop Per Child XO notebook largely due to it's price--$100 that, according to them, worked out with hidden costs to $200.

"[A] lot of testing has to be done to ensure that the technology works properly. Once the testing is over, the computers will be made available on commercial basis. The target is to make it available in six months time.”

I love the new screen, but I think the price boost takes away the "cheap appeal" of the original Eee. Once you breach the 600 dollar range, it's a hard call between buying a full powered laptop and a portable surfing device. With HP's new gear, the small and cheap laptop space is going to get crowded.

Having said that, the Eee's form factor is near perfect when you're traveling. My first generation Eee was indispensable during my trip to San Francisco. I was able to plan my itineraries and book restaurant reservations from the convenience of my hotel room without having to lug a full sized laptop during my travels.

The One Laptop Per Child Foundation of Cambridge was established to bring the world's children a $100 laptop, and according to founder Nicholas Negroponte, the organization is still determined to reach that goal. But last year, it quietly raised the price of its proprietary XO laptop from $188 to $204, more than twice what the foundation originally hoped to charge. Now Negroponte is promising to cut the price of the XO by $24, to $180. "I believe it will go down another $20 soon," he added. But even at $160, the laptop will cost far more than its original $100 target price.

The foundation offers its laptops for sale to governments of developing countries, which can then distribute the machines to poor school children. Negroponte said four countries that bought XO laptops last year - Mongolia, Rwanda, Peru, and Uruguay - agreed to pay $204 for each laptop. That's $16 more than the laptop's 2007 price of $188.

"The price floats," Negroponte said. "It floated up because of two primary reasons: cost of raw materials and value of the dollar."

But now, Negroponte said raw materials have gotten cheaper and the dollar, which sharply declined in value in late 2008, has recovered somewhat. That means it takes fewer dollars to buy the same quantity of goods in the Asian countries that supply components for the laptop.

Meanwhile, Negroponte's team is busy designing the sequel to the XO, a laptop that will feature a second screen that will take the place of the traditional keyboard. Negroponte hopes to have a prototype built within 18 months, and thinks computer makers will be able to produce the machine for even less than the current XO - perhaps as little as $75.

There's also a plan to provide free Internet access to XO users by piggybacking on cellular telephone and satellite systems in developing countries. "This world has lots of bandwidth that just goes unused," Negroponte said. "It's like standby seats on airplanes."

It's an ambitious agenda for the foundation, which recently dismissed about 32 workers - half of its staff - due to falling corporate donations and the disas trous decline in holiday sales of the XO laptop. Christopher Dawson, director of technology at the Athol-Royalston Regional School District, who blogs about educational technology at the ZDNet news site, said Negroponte's team went wrong by trying to produce and distribute the computer themselves instead of leaving that to private companies. "There are some great idea people at OLPC," said Dawson, "but they don't have the marketing and manufacturing skills to put it all together."

Negroponte said that when the foundation was launched in 2005, no company built a machine - a small device that uses little power and has a display screen that can easily be read under bright sunlight - suited for rural areas without easy access to electricity. "Four years ago, we had no choice," Negroponte said. "We had to build a laptop." So the group's engineers designed the machine of their dreams and contracted with Quanta Computer of Taiwan to manufacture it.

Worlds Cheapest Laptop.

In the world of cheap laptops the TNX-9500 is the newest thing on the market. The Windows XP- powered unit isn't as cheap as say the Del Mini 9 on sale. But $199 is pretty cheap.

As reports surface. It seems that the new laptop is rumored to have some issues; it beeps continuously for several minutes when it is first turned on, the 1GHz no-name processor seems very unwilling to run Internet Explorer. Rumors also say that there is a howling sound being produced by the always-on microphone feeding back through the speakers.

No date has been set for Production. But rumor has it that it will be ramping up soon and the price is said to be dropping even more. Is that even possible? Hopefully when the Impulse TNX-9500 enters full production, all the flaws will be ironed out. And it will be cheaper than the price stated to make it worth a purchase.
